Ignoring My Email...

Have you ever seen an email in your inbox and just dreaded checking it? Or maybe you even see a message from someone you like, but just don't feel like typing a response.

I use email all day, every day at work. I'm constantly checking in with my boss, sending emails to people in the community, and sending and receiving pictures and videos. Email is essential to my job, but sometimes I wish it weren't.

It seems like the phone call is a lost art. So many people in their teens, 20s, or 30s, seem to fear talking on the phone, and I get it. It can be sweat-inducing to try to talk to someone who may not want to talk to you. What if you stutter? What if you say the wrong thing?

Luckily, I've mostly grown out of those fears, but it does get me some time. Must we always be available to answer an email, take a call, or respond to a text? It seems in this fast-paced world, many of us become inundated by so many modes of communication.

When an email pops up in my inbox and I just don't feel like answering, I just let the little mailbox icon blink and stay in bold, letting me know that I have things to do. Don't feel bad about minimizing the browser, don't feel bad about putting your phone on silent, and don't feel bad about ignoring a Facebook message, even if the sender can see you're online.

Don't get me wrong, I won't ignore an unread message forever. Sometimes I need a few minutes or even a few hours to muster up the strength it takes to hit reply. In this world of so little choice, I'm going to choose to ignore some of my emails...at least for now.
